Air Zimbabwe is set to resume direct flights between Harare and London on July 1, marking a major milestone in the national carrier’s recovery efforts and restoring a route that has been dormant for 14 years.

The relaunch will see Air Zimbabwe operate direct services to London Gatwick for the first time since January 2012, when the route was suspended amid severe financial challenges, mounting debt and fleet shortages.

The Harare-London route was once one of the airline’s flagship international services, linking Zimbabwe directly to the United Kingdom and serving thousands of Zimbabweans living abroad. Its suspension left travellers reliant on connecting flights through regional and international hubs.

The return of the route is expected to benefit Zimbabwe’s large diaspora community in the UK, while also boosting tourism, trade and business travel between the two countries.
Air Zimbabwe had initially targeted June for the relaunch but failed to meet the deadline as preparations continued. The July 1 launch date now represents a significant step forward in the airline’s long-term turnaround programme.

The restoration of the London service forms part of broader efforts by the Mutapa Investment Fund to revive the national carrier and restore key international routes. Industry reports suggest the airline may initially use leased aircraft as it rebuilds its long-haul operational capacity..

The move is being viewed as both a symbolic and practical achievement for Air Zimbabwe. If the launch proceeds as planned, it will mark exactly 14 years since the airline last operated a direct flight to the British capital.
For many Zimbabweans at home and abroad, the return of direct flights to London signals renewed confidence in the national carrier and a significant step towards strengthening Zimbabwe’s global air connectivity.
