He is widely thought to prefer his son, military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba, as his successor, although he has refuted claims of preparing Kainerugaba for this position.
Pop star Bobi Wine, who was the runner-up to Museveni in the last two elections, is currently in exile in the United States after escaping a military raid on his residence following the election.
