At least 12 people were killed and nine others injured after gunmen opened fire at an informal settlement in Cleveland, east of Johannesburg, on Tuesday night.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), officers responded to reports of a shooting in progress at the Jumpers informal settlement at around 11:10 p.m.
Upon arrival, police discovered multiple victims. Eight men and three women were declared dead at the scene, while another man later died in hospital from his injuries, bringing the death toll to 12.
The nine injured victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment.
Police have launched an investigation into the deadly attack, and the motive behind the shooting remains unclear. No arrests have been reported so far.
