Bafana Bafana’s journey in the 2026 FIFA World Cup commenced on a disappointing note, as they faced a 2-0 loss to the host nation, Mexico, during a dramatic Group A match held at the renowned Azteca Stadium on Thursday.

The encounter was marred by disciplinary controversies, with the referee issuing three red cards in a fiercely contested game. South Africa found themselves down to nine players after midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was dismissed early in the second half, followed by veteran playmaker Themba Zwane receiving a red card late in the match. Additionally, Mexico’s defender César Montes was shown a red card during stoppage time.

Mexico opened the scoring in the ninth minute with Julián Quiñones capitalizing on a defensive blunder, and veteran striker Raúl Jiménez secured the win with a header in the second half.

Despite displaying moments of determination, Bafana Bafana struggled to regain control after the expulsions and could not find a path back into the game. This result leaves South Africa in search of points in their upcoming group matches against the Czech Republic and South Korea.

This defeat signifies a challenging beginning for Hugo Broos’ squad, who made their return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2010.
